How We Choose

The honest answer to “why should I trust a coffee gift guide?” is usually the one nobody gives. Plenty of “we tested 40 machines” roundups didn’t, and can’t prove they did. We take the opposite approach: we tell you plainly what we did and didn’t do, so you can judge the picks on their merits.

What we do

• Read the specs, from the source.For every product, we compile the published specs from the manufacturer and the retailer listing — portafilter size, capacity, roast, materials — and we link the listing we read them from, dated.
• Reason about gift fit.Our real expertise is picking gifts for people, so every recommendation starts from who it’s for and who should skip it. That “skip this if…” is the judgment a gift buyer actually needs, and a fake-tested list rarely bothers with it.
• Pull prices live and date them. Prices come from a daily Amazon check and carry the date they were pulled (currently July 25, 2026). If the check stops, the number disappearsrather than going stale — the failure mode is silence, not a false claim.
• Put picks in budget tiers.Because you’re shopping to a number, every guide tells you roughly what a pick costs and sorts options by budget — under $25, under $50, or a splurge.

What we do NOT do

• We do not run a lab.We have not physically tested the products we recommend. We research, compile and compare — and we’ll never claim a hands-on test we didn’t do.
• We do not invent ratings.There are no fabricated star ratings, review counts or testimonials anywhere on this site. You won’t find a made-up “4.7 in our testing” number, because we didn’t test.
• We do not borrow credentials. Our writer is an enthusiast, not a certified barista or food scientist, and we say so on our about pagerather than implying an authority we don’t have.
• We do not let commissions pick winners.Where a cheaper option is the better gift for the person, that’s our pick — even when a pricier one would pay us more.

Why this is a better basis for a gift

A gift decision isn’t really a lab question — it’s a fit question. Will this suit how they already make coffee? Is it in the right budget? Will they use it, or store it? Those are the things we’re genuinely good at answering, and they matter more for a gift than a torque reading ever could. Where a factual claim does come up — caffeine content, for instance — we cite a real source (the FDA, the National Coffee Association, Mayo Clinic) rather than asking you to trust us.
